A road that was too close for comfort to a runway was relocated as part of this safety improvement project managed by Branch Civil in the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

The Luray Caverns Airport services recreational aviators and visitors frequenting the renowned Luray Caverns, the largest series of caverns in the east.  The original access road surrounding the perimeter of the airport came very close to one end of the 3,100 foot runway, within the runway safety area.

Improvements involved clearing a forested area near the approach path, rebuilding the access road, and constructing an embankment at the end of the runway to provide a safe runoff area for aircraft.  Branch Civil also provided utility relocation and erosion and sediment control.

These safety enhancements and improvements will allow for the future expansion of the runway in Luray, a community which hosts a growing number of visitors each year.
