The rolling hills of Wythe County, Virginia are known for their beauty, but also for their geological complexity. As the Design-Build Contractor for a project to expand the thriving Progress Park industrial complex, Branch Civil overcame a variety of challenges to transform 230 acres of hills and woodlands into a 167+ acre pad-ready, railway-served site.
Branch Civil was under contract with the Joint Industrial Development Authority of Wythe County for the project just 5 months after the solicitation process began, which is an impressive feat in itself. Once crews started moving earth around, the feats continued. Workers moved 3.3 million cubic yards of on-site excavation involving 11 different soil types. In addition, Branch Civil performed 750,000 cubic yards of mass rock drill and shooting, along with stream mitigation and fill embankment along environmentally sensitive streams and wetlands.
Crews also had to contend with main power lines that run through the industrial park and two nearby, highly sensitive production facilities which operate around the clock.
Progress Park is located adjacent to two major interstates, I-77 and I-81, and boasts its own power substation park, water plant and high capacity fiber optic service.
