A portion of US 13 from Winton to Tarheel, NC, received a variety of improvements in this $58M project completed by Branch Civil, along with design partner Rummel, Klepper, & Kahl, LLP, and McLean Contracting Company.

The project widened 7.1 miles of US 13 into a four-lane divided highway, and was constructed to meet a 60 mph design speed for a level, rural through road.

The challenging project included the construction of several bridges and an interchange where US 13/158 meets NC Rt. 45 at Winton.  Bridge work included a new single-span, 1,200 foot long bridge over the Chowan River, dual bridges at Buckhorn Creek, dual bridges at the Rt. 13 over Rt. 45 interchange, and rehabilitation of the existing bridge over the Chowan River.

Along with poor soil conditions, one of the biggest challenges of this job was accomplishing 218,000 cubic yards of undercut without having to detour traffic.  Branch Civil utilized a slide rail system to accomplish the deep undercut in order to minimize the impact as the public traveled along this roadway.  Other major items included more than a million cubic yards of borrow fill and the laying of extensive storm drain pipe and water line.
