An established and highly cooperative relationship between Branch Civil and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was critical to the successful completion of this road widening project involving a major gateway to the oceanfront in Virginia Beach.

Birdneck Road serves a diverse spectrum of travelers, from school, business and military commuters to vacationers.  Minimizing the disruption of traffic on this roadway lined with homes, small businesses and tourist attractions was of prime importance to Branch Civil and its partners during the extensive improvements.

Branch Civil led the Design-Bid-Build Team on the project which involved the widening of a 2.1-mile portion of Birdneck Road from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided road.  The undertaking was riddled with geotechnical issues in addition to the challenges of managing heavy traffic volume on this thoroughfare.  Despite its complexities, the project was completed four months ahead of schedule.

Additional improvements included the rebuilding of four major signalized intersections, extensive utility relocation, sidewalks and a bike path.
