When Portsmouth’s Turnpike Road Reconstruction Project is complete, it will take those traveling on it to places they couldn’t get to before.

Turnpike Road will become a new connector route to I-264, the Elizabeth River Tunnel and Route 164 in the fast-growing Hampton Roads region.  Daily traffic on this route increased by 5,000 vehicles in just the past two years.  The improvements are expected to boost business even further in the area.

Branch Civil is General Contractor for the $23.4M project, which also improves vehicular and pedestrian safety by widening Turnpike Rd. from two lanes to four lanes with a 12-foot center median left turn lane.  Sidewalks are being added along with curbs and gutter.

The project is being completed in five phases, with segments of the roadway closed during each phase.  Detours are being put in place during construction, allowing motorists to reach all locations on Turnpike Road.

The reconstruction project began in Spring 2015 and is expected to be complete by May 2018.
